Trospium, Sanctura

Description

Trospium is a nonselective antimuscarinic medication

Action

nonselective antimuscarinic

Indications

Trospium is a nonselective antimuscarinic medication that has low lipophilicity, decreasing its potential for crossing the blood-brain barrier and theoretically reducing adverse effects. Trospium (20 mg PO bid) has been shown to reduce the number of daily urge incontinence episodes by 60%. It may also increase the average volume per void while decreasing average urge severity and daytime voiding frequency. The medication is well tolerated and causes no adverse central nervous system effects. Xerostomia (21.8%) and constipation (9.5%) are the most common adverse effects. Increased heart rate may also occur.

* Usual adult dose: 20 mg PO bid 1 h ac or 2 h pc

* Severe renal impairment, moderate hepatic impairment, or patient aged 75 years or older: 20 mg PO hs

* Half-life: 18.3 hours
