Information on InfluenzaDescription Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by an RNA virus of the family Orthomyxoviridae (the influenza viruses). Common symptoms of influenza infection include: fever, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, and weakness and fatigue. In more serious cases, influenza causes pneumonia, which can be fatal, particularly in young children and the elderly. Flu spreads around the world in seasonal epidemics. Three influenza pandemics occurred in the 20th century and killed tens of millions of people. Pandemics follow major genetic changes in the virus. The most common human influenza vaccine is the trivalent flu vaccine that contains purified and inactivated material from three viral strains (two influenza A virus subtypes and one influenza B virus strain). A vaccine formulated for one year may be ineffective in the following year, since the influenza virus changes rapidly over time and different strains become dominant. According to the on-line version of the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy: "Symptoms start 24 to 48 hours after infection and can begin suddenly. Chills or a chilly sensation are often the first indication of influenza. Fever is common during the first few days, and the temperature may rise to 102 to 103 ¡F (approximately 38 to 39 ¡C). Many people feel sufficiently ill to remain in bed for days; they have aches and pains throughout the body, most pronounced in the back and legs." Since influenza is caused by a virus, antibiotics have no effect on the infection. Antiviral drugs such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) are neuraminidase inhibitors designed to halt the spread of the virus in the body. These drugs are effective against both influenza A and B. The antiviral drugs amantadine and rimantadine are designed to block a viral ion channel and prevent the virus from infecting cells. These drugs are sometimes effective against influenza A if given early in the infection, but are always ineffective against influenza B Causes Influenza is caused by an RNA virus of the family Orthomyxoviridae (the influenza viruses). The common symptoms of the flu (fever, headaches, and fatigue) come from huge amounts of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines (such as interferon or tumor necrosis factor) produced from influenza-infected cells. Conventional Labs Diagnostic tests available for influenza include viral culture, serology, rapid antigen testing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and immunofluorescence assays. Commercial rapid diagnostic tests are available that can detect influenza viruses within 30 minutes. Specialty Lab Tests Products to consider Natural Therapies |

Unfortunately, that would be a clear violation of FDA regulations. Also, one of the most important aspect of naturopathy is: "Treat the person, not the disease". This is a profound statement, and many people have spent thousands of dollars on vitamins listed in books or web sites for a specific disease. This is what I call "vending machine medicine". It rarely works! The solution is to find a naturopathic physician, such as myself, to assist you.
