My personal journey towards health and wellness
My journey began several years ago when I was windsurfing. The wind was unbelievable and I was having perhaps one of the most memorable days of my life. After and hour or so of having a blast, I became completely fatigued. I was exhausted, happy and sick and tired of being sick and tired all the time! That was when I decided to do something.
At the time I was getting my doctorates degree in Electrical Engineering, and was surrounded by some of the best scientific minds in the United States. I went to the school doctor who said I was just stressed out and suggested eating chicken soup and crackers for a few days. After that didn't work, I went to the family physician, who I had seen as a child. He copied a chapter on Irritable Bowel Syndrome for me that described the disease, but had no information (or hope) on how to cure it.
In desperation I decided to look in a health food store. I remember flipping through some books on bowel disorders and being disgusted with the pictures of intestines. I was really glad when I saw a card on the counter for a Naturopathic medical doctor. My doctoral work had trained me well. I knew the value of seeking the advice of an expert. The next available appointment was in three months. It was worth the wait.
Dr. Ellis was, by far, the most intelligent person I had ever met. And he was quite happy and talked to me about devoting my life towards humanity. We talked about school (he had a doctorates degree in biochemistry from the school I was attending before going to naturopathic medical school). His secretary came in after a while and glared at him and said that there were a lot of people waiting for their appointments. He glanced at my intake form, smiled, and said that this was most likely due to my allergies and the allergy shots I had been dreading every week. A few supplements later I was feeling much better.
The next big shock came when I began to tell my friends at school, most of which also had health issues. They thought I was crazy. They all told me that I was throwing my life away when I decided to go to naturopathic medical school. All I could think of was the happyness I saw on the faces of the people Dr. Ellis had helped. It was a joy that I had never seen before, and it has changed my life forever.
